In the previous series, Dan and Amy Cahill had found the 39 clues and destroyed the serum that had caused the bickering between the four groups of Cahills: Lucian, Tomas, Ekaterina and Janus.All those who were involved in the Clue Hunt have now become Madrigals, the fifth branch of Cahills.
In the second series, that is, "Cahills vs Vespers", 2 years have passed since the Clue Hunt and Amy has been training all the Cahills in case something bad happens.
In the previous book, the author talked about the feud between the two most powerful families on Earth: Cahills and Vespers.All around the world, 7 members of the Cahill family have been kidnapped and held hostage by Vesper One, leader of the Vespers.
Nellie, Reagan, Ted, Fiske, Alistair, Natalie and Phoenix were kidnapped and held at ransom so that Vesper One could blackmail Amy and Dan to steal things for him.
The first message that they receive from Vesper One tells them to steal Caravaggio's Medusa from the Uffizi Gallery. After stealing the painting with Jonah's and Hamilton's help, Amy and Dan give it to Vesper One but it turns out to be a fake.
Vesper One then sends them a video of Nellie getting shot in the shoulder for their mistake.
Amy, Dan, Hamilton and Jonah discover that a Mud Angel names Tollin had stolen the real painting decades ago. Even though they had stolen the painting from him, they discovered that they lost the chargers to the DeOssie phone, which was their only way of communication with Vesper One.
When Ian goes back to look for info on the phone, Evan, Amy's boyfriend, immediately recognizes it. Ian then invites Evan to the Cahill Command Centre.
Upon further investigation of the painting, Amy and Dan find latin words on the back of it. This prompts Dan to ask his friend Atticus for help.
Will Amy and Dan be able to fulfill Vesper One's requests? Will they be able to save ther relatives?
