The seventh son of the seventh son, also known as Septimus Heap, is stolen by a midwife who announces that he is dead.
That same night, the boy's father, Silas Heap, comes across a child- a small baby girl- and takes her home. On his way, he finds the apprentice of the ExtraOrdinary wizard, Marcia Overstrand, waiting for him. The only thing that she says to him is to keep the newborn baby safe. Silas accepts this and also finds out that Marcia's mentor had died, and that now, she was the ExtraOrdinary wizard.
When he finds out that his son is dead, he is heartbroken. But he and his wife, Sarah, adopt the child, name her Jenna, and raise her as their own.
Months later, Sarah hears from a friend that the queen has been assassinated and that the castle has been taken over by the Supreme Custodian. The queen had been assassinated months before, around the same time as Marcia's mentor. She also finds out that the queen's daughter is missing.
Sarah realizes that Jenna, who looked completely different from the whole family of Heaps and had been found at around the same time of the Queen's assassination, is in grave danger.
Ten years later, on Jenna's birthday, Marcia comes in to tell the Heaps that their neighbor had been a spy for the Supreme Custodian and had just confirmed to him that Jenna was the missing princess. Marcia persuades Silas and Sarah to let her take Jenna for safety. On the way, Marcia and Jenna find a young boy -by the name Boy 412, almost dead, who was buried in the snow. He had been part of the Young Army, which brutally trained children since a young age.
When Marcia finds that the assassin, sent to kill the princess, is just outside her door, she panics and takes Jenna, Boy 412, Silas, Nicko (the youngest of the Heaps) and herself down the rubbish chute. From there they travel to the Marram Marshes, where Silas' sister Aunt Zelda lives.
In the marshes, Marcia finds that Boy 412 has extreme potential in Magic and she asks him to be her Apprentice but he refuses.
The story continues as the Supreme Custodian gives chase to find the princess... and Silas and Sarah find their lost son Septimus, in the one person that they least expected...
