The Guardians of Ga'Hoole

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole: Katherina Lasky

The Guardians of Ga'Hoole is a series written by Katherine Lasky. The characters are not humans, but owls.

The story is about a young barn owl called Soren; who has a admiring younger sister, Eglantine, and jealous older brother, Kludd.

Soren lives in a nest with his parents, siblings and nest maid (kind of like a nanny- the owls had blind snakes as their nurse maid. The snakes, though blind, were extremely sensitive) in the kingdom of Tyto. When Soren gets pushed out of his nest, not being able to fly, he cries out to his parents for help. He is snatched and captured by a patrol of evil owls from the St. Aegolius Academy for Orpahned Owls or St. Aggie's  for short. On the way, he meets an elf owl named Gylfie, who says that she too, was kidnapped.

On reaching St Aggie's the owls find that they are enslaved into dirty tasks such as sorting pellets and eggs. At night, the owls are instructed to stare at the moon and repeat their name again and again. Soren finds out from Gylfie that this was a process used to brainwash owls, named moon blinking.

When the owls stare at the moon, they are hypnotized and the name that they repeat again and again becomes nothing more than a syllable, a meaningless syllable. Gylfie and Soren tell stories to each other about the legendary "Guardians of Ga'Hoole" who are known for their noble, wise and educate personalities.

In the Academy, Soren and Gylfie find an owl name Hortense, who had deliberately stopped the growth of her feathers so that she would look like an owlet. The two young owls find that Hortense had been helping to rescue some of the stolen eggs and had been working undercover, resisting the "moon-blinking" process just like them.

Eventually, Hortense is found out and thrown of a cliff. In the mean time, Soren and Gylfie had been secretly learning how to fly from a semi-moon blinked owl, named Grimble, who wanted to help them escape. Though Grimble dies fighting two of the soldiers of St Aggie's, Soren and Gylfie escape, flying to find the Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

On their journey, they befriend two more owls, Twilight and Digger. Twilight was a Great Grey Owl who had learned to survive from the "Orphan School of Tough Learning". Digger was a philosophical Burrowing Owl whose parents had been killed by St Aggie's. They also find Soren's old nest maid, Mrs Plithiver. Together, they embark on a great journey to The Sea of Hoole, to find the Guardians of Ga'Hoole.

Soren also finds that his brother, Kludd, also known as "Metal Beak", was the leader of a large group of owls called the Pure Ones. He also finds that Kludd was responsible for moon- blinking Eglantine. The Pure Ones intended to take over the entire owl kingdom using flecks. These were metallic fragments that confused the owl's sense of direction and eventually confused its mind as well, leaving the owl helpless...

What will "The Band" (Soren, Twilight, Digger, and Gylfie) do? Will Soren save Eglantine?
