Divergent: by Veronica Roth
Divergent is the best, most amazing book I have EVER read. I think its a great book, especially for years 12+.
In Beatrice Prior's world, society is divided into five factions, each which promote a particular behavior or virtue- Abnegation (the selfless), Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Dauntless (the brave) and Erudite (the intelligent).
On a given day annually, the sixteen year olds have to take an aptitude test, which tells them which faction they are best suited for. For Beatrice, selflessness has never come naturally, like to her brother- Caleb. When the test is over, she finds that the results are inconclusive, that is, she doesn't fit in one faction alone, but three: Abnegation, Erudite and Dauntless. This makes her Divergent, and she is warned to never share this information with anyone, as it can bring danger to her life.
On a particular day of every year, all sixteen year olds have to choose the faction that they want to devote the rest of their life to. For Beatrice, its either staying with her family-in Abnegation- or being who she really is. Her choice surprises both herself and everyone else.
During the highly competitive initiation of the Dauntless - where the initiates have to prove themselves as part of them, or become faction-less- Beatrice becomes Tris, the brave Abnegation girl who is Divergent...
The Initiation is divided into three stages, which prepares the initiates physically, emotionally and mentally. Though Tris is weaker than the rest of the initiates, she ends up sixth in the physical examination. Her Instructor, Four, explains that the initiates must end up in the top ten after the initiation unless they want to end up faction-less.
In the midst of all this, Erudite starts releasing antagonizing reports on Abnegation, who run the government (as they are the most selfless). This stirs up unrest between the factions, and Tris starts getting worried about her family.. What will happen to them? It is clear the Erudite want to take over the government. What will happen?
