The Black Magician series

The Black Magician Series: by Trudy Canavan

The first book in the "Black Magician" series is called "The Magician's Guild". The main character is called Sonea.

Each winter, the city of Imardin is purged (removed) of its dwells by the magicians, who drive away the inhabitants of the slums. Each winter, gang members throw the rocks at the magicians, who are protected by the magical field that they themselves created.

That is, they were protected, until Sonea, a young dwell, hurls a rock at them, willing it to go through the shield.......and mildly injuring a magician by the name of Lord Fergun.

When Sonea realizes that it was her action, she knows that there can be only one answer. Magic. Then, she notices that while the other magicians were trying to find the culprit, one magician was looking straight at her. As he points her out to the other magicians, Sonea runs for her life.

Her 2 friends, Ceryni and Harin, who are the leaders of one of the rebellious gangs, help her to hide from the magicians as they search for her. Meanwhile, back at the Guild, Lord Rothen is reporting to the other magicians about the girl that he saw throwing the stone. They all agree to find the girl and teach her magic before it flares out of control. The High Lord agrees to this and helps them to find Sonea through his own powers. Every magician is in awe of the High Lord Akkarin, whose powers are greater than any other magician.

And the search starts. Cery takes Sonea through underground tunnels to hide her from the magicians. Who knows what the magicians will do to her if they find her. As he goes with Sonea, Cery finds himself being nervous when he is around her, and finally decides that the safest place for Sonea would be with the Thieves.

One day, Cery takes Sonea to the guild. Sneaking in, he shows her all the rooms. As he sneaks away to get some books on magic for her to read, Sonea sees a man, through a window, wearing rags bloodstained. And he says to his servant- "The fight has weakened me." And he takes a knife and takes the blood from the second man.

The Thieves were a large network of smugglers who were scary, to the dwells. The Thieves take in Sonea as they find that having a magician on their side would be beneficial. But try as she might, Sonea cannot control her powers, and using her magic only allows the magicians to find her easily.

When one day her powers finally go out of control, and she is found by the magicians, Cery blames himself for her capture. Rothen claimed that he had seen her first so he got to be her mentor for the time being. But Fergun also claimed to see her just as she had thrown the stone, obviously a lie.

The hearing due in a few weeks, Rothen starts to teach her to control her powers, and Sonea learns to trust him. One day, Cery climbs the Guild wall to see how Sonea is. Though he is cought, Lord Rothen takes him to see her. After talking with Sonea, Lord Fergun offers to escort him out and then traps him in a hidden room and leaves him there.

As Sonea's magic classes progress without the knowledge of Cery's imprisonment, so does Rothen's pride for her. But one day, Fergun visits Sonea and offers to let her escape the Guild without her powers being binded (if a magician wants to leave the Guild, they must have their powers blocked). After Fergun's second visit, Sonea learns of Cery's imprisonment.

What will Sonea do? How will she help Cery?
