Ender's Game

Ender's Game: by Orson Scott Card

A movie of this book came out recently. Which was why I wanted to read the book.

Humans have begun exploring the Universe and developing their space technology, when they come across an alien race known as the 'buggers' (or Formics). The buggers established a forward base on the Asteroid Eros, and fought 2 long wars with the human race; in the second one, the humans win a victory over the buggers due to the 'heroics' of Mazer Rackam.

To prepare for what comes to be known as the third invasion, the government establishes the International Fleet (IF) which in turn, creates a Battle Station in space, to train children to become soldiers in the war. The man in charge of training these kids is known as Colonel Graff.

The story starts with Andrew Wiggin (6 years old) , nicknamed Ender, who is attending an appointment for the removal of his monitor (on the back of his neck), which allows Colonel Graff to monitor his movements, his behaviour, and his thoughts. This allows Graff to determine whether or not Ender is capable of becoming one of the soldiers.

After the monitor is removed, Ender is attacked by one of the school bullies, Stilson, where, in the midst of protecting himself, Ender severely injures him. This proves to Colonel Graff that Ender is indeed capable of joining the Battle Station, and is, in fact, also capable of directing the command fleet (as it had been predicted).

Ender is teased at school because of him being a 'third' under Earth's two-child policy. He has a sister, Valentine (who he is very close to) and a brother, Peter (who he is afraid of). After returning home, Ender and his family are visited by Colonel Graff who asks Ender why he wounded Stilson. Ender replies that, by injuring Stilson (even though he didnt mean to fatally wound him) he prevented future fights.
Ender is then hired into Battle School, where Graff makes sure he does not create close relationships with fellow students.

The novel then follows Ender's experiences in Battle School, and how he becomes the Commander of the entire International Fleet.
